Why a Turkish Hamam in Istanbul Is a Must-Do Experience

If there’s one experience we always recommend to visitors when they come to Istanbul, it’s a visit to a traditional Turkish hamam. Whenever friends or family visit us in Istanbul, we take them to a hamam. And every single one has walked out saying the same thing: “I’m so glad we did that.”

A hamam isn’t just about relaxation (although that part is amazing). It’s about culture, history, and slowing down in a city that can feel wonderfully intense at times. It’s one of the most uniquely Turkish experiences you can have — and one that connects you directly to centuries of tradition.

What Is a Turkish Hamam?

Turkish baths, or hamams, have been part of life in Istanbul for hundreds of years. The tradition dates back to the 1600s, with roots tracing even further back to the Roman baths that existed here long before modern-day Istanbul.

Historically, hamams were more than just places to get clean. They were social gathering spots — places where neighbors met, talked, relaxed, and spent time together. While life looks very different today, stepping into a hamam still feels like stepping into another era.

Many of Istanbul’s traditional hamams have been continuously operating for centuries, while others have been beautifully restored or modernized, blending old-world architecture with spa-like comfort.

Why We Always Recommend a Traditional Hamam

You’ll notice that many hotels around Istanbul — especially higher-end ones — offer a “Turkish bath experience.” While these can be convenient, we almost always recommend seeking out a traditional hamam instead.

Here’s why:

  • Traditional hamams are often in historic buildings with stunning marble interiors
  • The rituals follow long-established customs
  • The experience feels far more authentic and memorable

Some modern hamams do offer expanded spa services, upgraded facilities, and a wider range of treatments. Those can certainly be enjoyable as well, but if you’re only going to experience a hamam once during your trip, we think it’s worth choosing a historic one.

What to Expect During a Hamam Visit

While each hamam offers slightly different services, most traditional experiences follow a similar flow:

  • Time spent in a steam room, sauna, or hot marble room to open your pores
  • A traditional body scrub using a handwoven kese (washcloth)
  • A luxurious foam wash
  • Some also offer a more traditional massage (optional, but highly recommended)

You’ll leave feeling incredibly clean and relaxed.

Men, Women, Couples & Families: How It Works

Many hamams in Istanbul:

  • Have separate sections for men and women, or
  • Operate with separate hours for men and women

However, some hamams offer mixed-gender sessions, which are especially great for couples or families who want to experience it together.

For example, we like to go to Süleymaniye Hamam, which allows men and women in the same area at the same time. This makes it a fantastic option for couples and families, and we have had many great experiences there.

Before booking your hamam experience, always check:

  • Whether sessions are mixed or separated
  • What’s included in the base price
  • Whether reservations are required (usually they are)

One of the most common questions people have before booking a hamam is whether you have to be naked.

While this can vary depending on the hamam, from our experience at Süleymaniye Hamam — they provided a cloth bathing suit that we wore throughout the treatment.

That said, practices can differ from one hamam to another, so if this is something you’re concerned about, it’s always a good idea to confirm directly with the specific hamam before booking.
